Procedure preparations
- Gum grafting is a surgery that aims to reconstruct receding or thinning gum. Gum recession causes the teeth roots to be exposed, and that increases teeth decay and sensitivity and might lead to bone loss around the teeth.
- During gum graft surgery, the patient is given local anesthesia, then the graft is taken from the mouth roof and implanted in the place of the gum recession. In some cases, the graft might be taken from a donor.
- The time that a gum graft surgery takes depends on the number of exposed teeth from the gum recession and the number of required gum grafts. It takes about an hour if only one graft is used or more if more grafts are used. The patient can return home after the surgery.
