Procedure preparations
- Ultrasonography is a noninvasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create an almost live image or video of an internal organ or other soft tissue.
- There are three types of ultrasound scan: pregnancy ultrasound, which is used to monitor the mother and the fetus during pregnancy, diagnostic ultrasound, which is used to check on the internal organs to see if there is a problem, and ultrasound guidance for procedures, which is used sometimes while performing certain procedures that require high precision.
- Traditional pregnancy ultrasound is a two-dimensional (2D) image that provides outlines and flat-looking pictures. 3D ultrasound provides some facial features and some other body parts, while 4D ultrasound is 3D in motion.
Procedure preparations
- Some types of ultrasound scans don’t require any preparations.
- Ultrasounds of the pelvis require filling up the bladder.
- Ultrasounds of the abdomen require not eating or drinking anything, except for water, several hours before the test.
Procedure complications
- Ultrasound imaging is generally safe. However, prolonged exposure to ultrasound during pregnancy might come with an increased possibility of developing risks.
