
Procedure preparations
- Cervical cerclage is performed to maintain the cervix closed during pregnancy in order to prevent preterm birth.
- A cervical stitch is performed in the case of a weakened cervix (this can happen due to a previous procedure) and past miscarriages.
- A cervical stitch is recommended when the cervix is weak in order to keep the fetus safe inside the uterus until the delivery time.
- The cervical cerclage procedure is done under local anesthesia, and the patient can return home a couple hours after the procedure.

Procedure complications

- Preterm labor.
- Scarring.
- Tearing of the cervix or uterus when the labor progresses and the stitches are still intact.
Procedure instructions
- Cramping and spotting for a few days after the procedure is normal.
- The patient must rest on the day of the procedure.
- The patient can’t have intercourse for ten days after the procedure.
- You can’t do strenuous exercise or lift heavy objects for ten days after the procedure.
- You must stick to the medications prescribed by the doctor and the regular visits.
- Immediately contact your doctor when any sudden, odd problem or symptoms emerge.
- The cervix stitches will be removed when the pregnancy reaches full term (about the 37th week of pregnancy).
