Procedure preparations

  • Ovarian cysts are a very common condition, and in most cases, they’re non-pathological and can disappear alone, but in some cases, they must be removed immediately, like in the following cases: when the cyst is large (larger than 6.3-7.6 cm in diameter), there’s excruciating pain, or the cyst might be cancerous.
  • Ovarian cystectomy can be done with two methods: surgically by opening the abdomen, which is used when the cysts are large or if they might be cancerous, or endoscopically, which is the most common method. It’s done by making a few small incisions, then inserting a camera and the special tools, and the cysts are removed through these incisions. The patient must be under general anesthesia for both methods.
  • Usually, ovarian cystectomy takes one or two hours, and the patient can return home on the same day when it’s done laparoscopically, while in open surgery, she might need to stay in the hospital overnight.

Procedure preparations

  • The patient must avoid foods and drinks for 8 hours before the procedure, and she might need to stop taking some medications, if any, as the doctor recommends.

Procedure complications

  • Anesthesia complications.
  • Infections.
  • Bleeding.
  • Blood clots.
  • Damage to the surrounding organs or tissue.
  • Irritating at the incision site.
  • The recurrence of the cysts.

Procedure instructions

  • The patient might feel pain and discomfort for a few days.
  • The incision must be cleaned with a sterilizer constantly, and try not to squeeze yourself forcefully when coughing and sneezing.
  • The patient must contact the doctor immediately if a symptom or a problem occurs.
  • In the case of the laparoscopically ovarian cystectomy, the patient can return to her normal activity in 2-3 weeks after the procedure, while in open surgery, she might need 6-8 weeks to return to her normal activity, and in some cases, she might need up to 12 weeks.
