Procedure preparations

  • Kidney transplant is a surgical procedure in which a healthy kidney is transplanted to a patient whose kidney shut down, such as with chronic kidney disease or end-stage kidney failure. In this case, the patient must have dialysis or a kidney transplant.
  • In most of the cases, the old kidneys remain when the new one is transplanted, but some cases might require removing the old ones when they negatively affect the patient.
  • Usually, kidney transplant surgery takes 2-4 hours, and the patient must stay in the hospital for at least three days.

Procedure preparations

  • Examining the patient’s health in general.
  • The patient must be eligible for a kidney transplant. A kidney transplant can’t be done for a patient who can’t undergo surgery, a patient with a recurrent infection, a patient whose life expectancy is short, and a patient who abuses drugs or alcohol.
  • You must follow a specific lifestyle, as the doctor recommends.
  • You mustn’t have anything for 12 hours before the surgery.

Procedure complications

  • Bleeding.
  • Infections.
  • Anesthesia complications.
  • Blood clots.
  • Leakage or blockage in the ureter.
  • Rejection of the new kidney, which might lead to failing of the transplantation.

Procedure instructions

  • The patient must take immunosuppressants for the rest of their life to prevent rejecting the transplanted kidney. The immunosuppressants might cause side effects, such as hypertension, high cholesterol, increased hair growth or hair loss, bone thinning, diabetes, weight gain, acne, and increased cancer risk, especially skin cancer and lymphoma.
  • You must stick to the medications prescribed by the doctor and the regular visits.
  • You must avoid strenuous physical activity and heavy lifting for at least 6-8 weeks.
  • You can do some mild physical activity, as the doctor recommends.
  • You must follow a healthy lifestyle and take care of your health because your immune system is compromised due to the immunosuppressants.
  • You can live normally for about 12 years with the transplanted kidney.
  • Full recovery usually takes 6-8 weeks.
