Procedure preparations

  • In diskectomy, an intervertebral disk is removed partially or completely from the spine. Intervertebral disks are like flat cushions that are located between the vertebrae and absorb the shocks that the spine might go through. The intervertebral disk consists of a flexible ring that surrounds a soft gel-like substance, and in case the disk tears due to a specific reason, this soft substance might leak and lead to a herniated disc condition, which might irritate or press on the surrounding nerves, and that causes annoying and very painful symptoms. In most of the cases, herniated disc occurs in the lower back and sometimes in the neck, while it rarely occurs in the middle of the back. Discectomy is done in severe cases that didn’t respond to other treatments.
  • Discectomy might be done with open surgery or by using endoscopic surgery, and general or local anesthesia could be used, depending on the case.
  • Diskectomy usually takes one or two hours, and in the case of endoscopic surgery, the patient can return home on the same day, while in open surgery, the patient might need to stay in the hospital for one or two days.
