Procedure preparations

  • In a bone marrow transplant, healthy blood-forming stem cells are infused into the patient’s body to replace the old ones. Bone marrow is a soft substance that’s existed inside the bones and is responsible for producing the blood cells and platelets. Stem cells are the foundation cells in the body that could be any type of other cell.
  • Healthy stem cells can be taken from the patient (autologous) or from a donor (allogeneic), and bone marrow transplant is used in numerous cancerous and noncancerous health conditions, such as acute and chronic leukemia, aplastic anemia, Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, adrenoleukodystrophy, hemoglobinopathies, multiple myeloma, myelodysplastic, and many other conditions.
  • In case the stem cells are taken from the patient, they’re extracted through a process called apheresis, in which the blood components are separated to collect the stem cells. While in the case of using stem cells from a donor, they could be taken through apheresis as well or by taking the bone marrow, depending on the patient’s case.
  • Before bone marrow transplant, the patient is prepared by undergoing chemical or radiation therapy to destroy the cells that we want to replace; after that, the stem cell transplant is done.
  • The patient stays awake during the whole bone marrow transplant procedure, and they must stay in the hospital under monitoring for a period of time, depending on the case.

Procedure preparations

  • Preparations are done by examining the patient’s health in general and doing some tests.
