Procedure preparations
- A bone grafting procedure is used to promote the natural process of bone-making in the body in many cases. Bone grafting surgery is done either by applying substances in the gaps of broken or weak bones to support them or by stimulating the tissue growth in order to strengthen the bones and retrieve their stiffness.
- Bone grafting procedure is used in several cases: when the bones don’t heal properly after a fracture, bone diseases like osteoporosis and cancer, osteomyelitis, congenital abnormalities, dental bone grafts, spinal fusion, and joint replacement surgery.
Types of bone grafting:
- Autograft: it uses a sample from the patient’s bone tissue. This increases the chances of successful bone healing, lowers the chances of infections, and doesn’t have a risk of disease transmission.
- Allograft: it uses a sample from a donor’s bone tissue. In this case, there isn’t an additional necessary procedure to harvest the bone tissue, it lowers the risk of disease spreading because the bone tissue is sanitized, and it doesn’t take tissue from other bones.
- Synthetic bone graft: it uses artificially produced materials. The materials here are sterile and available so they can repair large bone parts, and it provides many options.
- Bone marrow aspirate: the bone marrow contains stem cells in addition to progenitor cells that help the bone to heal.
