Procedure preparations

  • In prostatectomy, the prostate in males is removed completely or partially, depending on the case. In most cases, complete prostate removal is done in the case of a prostate cancer that didn’t metastasize to other places. And sometimes, a partial prostatectomy is done in the case of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is a condition that causes the prostate to be enlarged more than its normal size, which leads to several symptoms, and that’s in case other treatments didn’t work.
  • Prostate removal surgery can be done using open surgery, which means making a surgical incision, or endoscopic surgery.
  • Prostatectomy is done under general anesthesia, and it could take 2-4 hours, depending on the case. The patient can return home on the same day or the next day in the case of an endoscopic surgery, while he needs to stay in the hospital for 3-4 days in the case of an open surgery.

Procedure preparations

  • Examining the patient’s health in general.
  • The patient must stop taking blood thinners (anticoagulant medications), ibuprofen, and any other medications that the doctor mentions two weeks before the procedure.
  • The patient mustn’t have anything for 12 hours before the procedure.

Procedure complications

  • Anesthesia problems.
  • Blood clots.
  • Bleeding.
  • Urinary tract infections.
  • Erectile dysfunction that might last up to 6 months.
  • Narrowed urethra.
  • Seroma (fluid buildup).
  • Hematoma.
  • Damage in one of the nearby organs.
  • Penile atrophy.
  • Retrograde ejaculation (the semen goes to the bladder).

Procedure instructions

  • Some side effects might occur temporarily, such as urinary incontinence (losing the ability to control the bladder), and this is normal.
  • You must stick to the medications prescribed by the doctor and the regular visits.
  • Immediately contact your surgeon when any sudden, odd problem or symptoms emerge.
  • You can return to your normal daily routine 2-3 weeks after the surgery.
  • You mustn’t do strenuous physical activity or heavy lifting for 4-6 weeks after the procedure.
  • Full recovery requires 4-8 weeks, depending on the surgery type.
