Procedure preparations

In coronary artery bypass surgery a new path is opened for the blood to go around the partially or completely blocked arteries around the heart, and that’s is done by using a healthy blood vessel from the chest or leg.

Coronary artery bypass graft surgery is done in many conditions, such as a blockage in the left main heart artery, severe narrowing of the main heart artery, severe chest pain caused by narrowing of several heart arteries, damage in more than one heart artery and the left ventricle not working well, a blocked heart artery that can't be treated with coronary angioplasty, and a failed angioplasty with or without stents.

CABG surgery can be done with or without using a heart-lung bypass machine, which works by bumping blood for the body instead of the heart until finishing the procedure, depending on the case.

Coronary artery bypass grafting is done under general anesthesia, and it takes 3-6 hours, depending on the case. The patient must stay in the hospital for a few days under monitoring.
