Procedure preparations
- In amputation, an extremity or appendage is removed completely (most commonly hands, arms, legs, feet, fingers, and toes) in many conditions. Amputation surgery is done if there’s a problem in this extremity or appendage that can’t be treated in any other way; therefore, it must be amputated before it causes damage to other body parts. This occurs when nerves don’t work properly and that leads to the loss of sensation in this part, or when the blood vessels don’t nourish this part, which causes the tissues to die.
- The most common conditions that lead to amputation: nerve damage that’s caused by diabetes, such as diabetic foot, gangrene (dying tissue due to the loss in blood nourishment), complications resulted from peripheral artery disease, stage three of frostbite (skin damage due to low temperature), life-threatening infections, some cancers, and damage due to accidents.
- Amputation surgery is done under general anesthesia, and the patient must stay in the hospital from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the case.

- Examining the patient’s health in general.
- The patient must stop taking blood thinners (anticoagulant medications), ibuprofen, and any other medications that the doctor mentions two weeks before the procedure.

Procedure instructions
- It’s normal to be in a bad psychological situation; therefore, ask for help immediately.
- You must stick to the medications prescribed by the doctor and the regular visits.
- Immediately contact your surgeon when any sudden, odd problem or symptoms emerge.
- Usually, wound healing at the site of the amputation takes 2-3 months.
