- A dilation and curettage procedure is performed to empty the inside of the uterus in certain cases, including removing tissue from the uterus after abortion, miscarriage, or if there are parts of the placenta that remain in the uterus after giving birth, in addition to diagnosing or treating abnormal uterine bleeding, like removing irregular tissue that can cause fibroids or uterine cancer, and it’s also used to remove cysts, polyps, and tumors.
- Either general or local anesthesia is used during the dilation & curettage procedure, depending on the case, and after that, the doctor will dilate the vagina and curette the uterus with a scraping device to remove the tissue from inside the uterus.
- The dilation and curettage procedure usually takes 5-10 minutes, and it can be done in the hospital or in the doctor’s office. You can return home immediately or within a few hours after the procedure.
